The Upstream Work-Life Balance Approach.
Known as the Professor of Work-Life Balance for Public Safety, Dr. Donnie Hutchinson has taken his research and passion to a new level. As founder and CEO of the First Responder Center for Balance & Well-Being, Dr. Donnie and a Team of Advisors are leading the charge in Proactive Behavioral Health. Dr. Donnie formulated the Learn–Practice–Lead (LPL) model in his work to provide learners with a lifelong formula to gain new knowledge, put it into practice, and lead others through teaching.
Public Safety in all communities proactively practicing healthy work-life balance and wellbeing habits for themselves, their families, and those they lead in organizations while being an example to the communities they serve.
To collaborate, teach, encourage, and inspire public safety leaders to invest time, effort and training dollars into Proactive Behavioral Health Programs. These programs should help public safety employees improve their physical, mental, social, and spiritual self-care wellness habits, their family relationships, and well-being.
It begins with self-care. The greater we manage our physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellness needs, the more effective we will be in our careers and home life.
The IAFC specifies in their Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative that a comprehensive behavioral health program should focus on prevention and a proactive approach. The focus should be on recognizing, managing, and reducing the effects of stress on firefighters’ emotional and physical health. They also recommend supporting and including family members through educational materials. They specifically state that firefighters who are committed to their own behavioral health, well-being, and healthy family relationships increase their resiliency.
This 3-minute video will give you a great overview!
Imagine the success and happiness you will feel when your family relationships are improving. Imagine your family having a closer relationship with you and what that could do for their success and happiness.
Optimal physical health is a journey. Not only will you improve your safety while on duty, you will have more energy for your family and improve your overall wellness.
A happy home makes for a less stressful day on duty. Improving your weight and fitness have positive spillover effects that promote calmness and focus.
Research shows emotional resiliency can be improved with self-care and work-life balance.
98% of first responders claim their family relationships and their health and wellness are priorities in their lives. Yet a majority fail to align their day-to-day behaviors with these priorities.
You have taken an oath to serve and protect your community yet sometimes fail to recognize that you and your family are a part of that community. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup...fill your cup first.
Balance Boost Mobile App is a department-wide proactive behavioral health resource for firefighters, staff, and their families. Through the guidance of the board of advisors and workshop participants, Dr. Donnie designed the educational and training materials incorporating a Learn, practice, and lead (L-P-L) model for lifelong learning. Each week, App users get a chance to learn, put the new knowledge into practice, and lead others by talking about their experiences at the kitchen table, both at the firehouse and at home.
FAMILY FRIENDLY:
Dr. Donnie designs Balance Boost’s weekly lessons to share and discuss among those closest to the learners. We acknowledge some firefighters might not participate in reading or watching the weekly lessons. However, they will continue to be invited to the learning table through others discussing it on shift and perhaps encouragement from their spouses or other family members. Children of high school age or older can benefit from joining in on the learning.
